COLWYN BAY missed a hatful of chances in the second half and came away empy handed after a 1-0 defeat at unbeaten Penybont.
The only goal of the Saturday lunchtime game came after 28 minutes and the Seagulls couldn’t find an equaliser and still look for their first away victory of the season.
They started the game well and had two big early penalty shouts – the first waved away by the referee, who was backed up by VAR, before home keeper Dan Higgs was rescued by a very tight offside decision when bringing down Adam Davies inside the area.
Penybont had to make two changes due to injuries and it was substitute Owen Pritchard who go the only goal, somewhat against the run of play, on 28 minutes when the Bay failed to clear a left wing cross.
Chris Venables then hit the bar and Mark Halstead made a good save from Pritchard to keep the lead to one goal at half-time.
The Bay pressed hard for a second half equaliser, but couldn’t find a way past home keeper Higgins who made three excellent saves, while Penybont also cleared off the line from a goalmouth scramble and Adam Davies and Ryan Astles were both wide with far post headed chances from corners that should have been put away.
The Seagulls lost Adam Davies with a head injury on 64 minutes but still had chances to rescue a point with Sam Hart heading over the bar from six yards and Lewis Sirrell and Callum Bratley both firing shots wide.
The result leaves the Bay in ninth place in the table, five points off the top six.
