Colwyn Bay FC 1 – Conwy Borough FC 2
Conwy got a flying start with a goal in the opening 90 seconds by Corrig McGonigle.
The Bay equalised on 22 minutes with George Mannion heading his first goal for the club from Cai Owen’s cross, but Conwy were back in front by half-time with a thunderbolt from Sean McCaffery into the bottom corner of the net.
Colwyn Bay had numerous chances in the second half, but couldn’t find the net, with Conwy keeper Rory Crowther making good saves from Mannion, Llyr Morris (twice) and Danny Edwards. Joe Williams shot narrowly wide and he and Sam Downey both headed off target from other chances.
At the other end Andy Coughlin made a couple of big saves to keep his side in the game.
Bay boss Craig Hogg afterwards reflected on a frustrating night for his side.
“I think the biggest frustration started within the first minute and 30 seconds, when we were 1-0 down,” Craig said.
“No real clever play has opened us up, but the play that they’ve made has done that and they’ve got in and scored.
“We’ve had to go and score a really good goal through George Mannion, who I thought played really well for us tonight, scoring his first goal for the club in the Cymru North.
“And then we’ve gone and shot ourselves in the foot by conceding right before half time.
“It’s given us a battle in the second half – we knew that they would sit in deep and we knew we had to try and unlock the door.
“We’ve changed system and tried to move personnel around.
“To hit the post and bar four times in the space of a minute towards the end you just know it’s not going to be your night.
“We now need to make sure we get this game out of our system as quickly as we can and focus our attention on Penrhyncoch on Saturday.”
