Recap
RUTHIN TOWN completed a JD Cymru North league double with a 4-2 win over a depleted Bay side hit by injury and illness.
James Ellison made his 50th Bay appearance while manager Craig Hogg handed a first start to teenager Macsen Rhys-Williams, with fellow Under-19 team members Aled Beardmore and Geraint Thomas named on the bench.
The game marked the official switching on of the floodlights at Ruthin’s Memorial Playing Fields and it was the home side who started brighter.
Sam Ricketts scored with a free header from a corner to give the hosts a fifth minute lead.
George Mannion had a shot blocked by keeper Ryan Goldston before Will Owen doubled Ruthin’s advantage with a tap in following a counter attack.
Captain Tom McCready’s free-kick went wide as the Bay struggled to get a foothold in the game.
Jamie Cumming scored Ruthin’s third but Bay pulled a goal back four minutes later when he netted after Goldston had failed to hold onto the ball.
Goldston denied James Kirby and Sam Jones twice in what was a better second half for the Bay before the Seagulls were awarded a penalty.
Jones was brought down in the box but Kirby’s powerful spot kick struck the crossbar.
Matt Hall netted a fourth for Ruthin and although Sirrell scored a second with a fine goal two minutes from time, it was an afternoon to forget for the Bay, who suffered defeat after four successive wins.
Bay manager Craig Hogg commented after the game:
“Without brushing anything under the carpet you have to give Ruthin credit for the way they performed.
“I thought they were very good in the first half an caused us problems.
“We had a plan to set up in a different way but circumstances this week and this morning dictated a change of plans.
“First half we were poor against a good side.
“To be 3-1 down was disappointing but we regrouped well in the second half and we’ve had six or seven chances and a penalty.
“On another day we might have got something from the game.
“The players that were here today gave everything and I was pleased to give Macsen Rhys-Williams his first start – it’s come a lot sooner than I thought it would.
“I was pleased for Lewis Sirrell and the goals that he got.
“But we are were we are at the moment and we’ve got to stick together.”
