Match Report

RHYS LLOYD saved two spot kicks to emerge as the hero as the Seagulls beat Flint Mountain on penalties (4-3) to progress to the next round of the WBS Cup.

He also made a crucial save from Mike Hayes in a one-on-one in normal time to ensure the tie went to penalties after Lloyd Marsh Hughes had fired the Bay level following Flint Mountain taking a first half lead from a corner.

Colwyn Bay dominated much of the game and got into some good positions to put the game to bed much earlier, but let themselves down in the final third.

They suffered the early blow of losing Sol Forde through injury after only seven minutes, but started the game well and Lloyd Marsh-Hughes’ effort from Josh Carey’s pass hit a post.

Lloyd was then taken out by the last defender when racing clear on goal but amazingly the referee waved play on

Against the run of play Flint Mountain took the lead on 22 minutes with a near post header by Rowan Whelan from a corner and they were unlucky not to increase their lead when Tom Dyer struck the crossbar from 25 yards.

The Seagulls however equalised before half-time when Tommy Creamer’s pass played in Lloyd Marsh-Hughes to tuck away the chance.

In the second half Bay again created good openings down both flanks but couldn’t score, with Tom Creamer going closest with a screamer from 25 yards that was just wide.

It then needed Rhys Lloyd to save with his legs from Mike Hayes in a one-on-one to keep Bay level and Flint should have won it right at the end when Rob Hughes broke clear but fired his angled shot narrowly wide.

And so to penalties and after new Bay signing Ryan Kehoe had his opening kick saved by Flint keeper John Danby, Rhys Lloyd made two excellent diving saves f (low to his left and then to his right) from Ben Lawrence and Mike Hayes, while Craig Lindfield, Jay Owen, Dan Atkins and Jamie Cumming all scored for the Seagulls to send them through to the next round.
