THE Seagulls were beaten by a goal in added time, 90 seconds after looking as though they had rescued at least a point, in a devastating 2-1 home defeat to Aberystwyth Town.
It leaves the Bay, who have now six home league games without a win, four points behind their bottom three rivals with just three games to go.
Both Aberystwyth goals came from set pieces which Bay failed to clear, while the Seagulls missed some gilt-edged chances at the other end.
Aberystwyth, who were denied when Reece Trueman made a fine early save from Zac Hartley, led 1-0 at half-time when Jack Thorn scored following a free kick into the area.
Colwyn Bay had their chances to be at least level but Udi Akpan’s heavy touch allowed keeper Owen Jones to save at his feet and then Jamie Cumming headed wide from Tom McCready’s free kick after seeing the ball drop off target as he got it over the onrushing keeper in a one-on-one.
The Seagulls pressed relentlessly in the second half and Udi Akpan saw his deflected shot cleared off the line before substitute Lloyd Marsh-Hughes beat the keeper to a high ball in the area but headed wide of a gaping goal.
Marsh-Hughes missed another huge chance when he put a free header wide of the target from a super cross from Alex Downes.
They were to prove costly misses and although Bay did equalise in the 89th minute with what looked like an own goal by Billy Kirkham (although Dan Atkins will want to claim it for his first goal in a Bay shirt), Aberystwyth snatched three massive points and break Bay hearts with Steff Davies’s close range finish from a corner in added time.
