Match Report
JAMIE CUMMING scored for the second week running to cap a brilliant 3-0 away win for the Seagulls at Pontypridd United.
Udi Akpan had headed Bay into a half-time lead before Tom McCready scored a second half penalty and Jamie sealed victory with Bay’s third.
The win lifted Colwyn Bay off bottom place, ahead of Aberystwyth on goal difference, and to within two points of Pontypridd with a game in hand.
They had to survive early Pontypridd pressure in which the home side hit the post and missed a great chance when Cory Hurford shot over the bar after Maertins had rounded keeper Joe Smith and laid the ball off to him.
But the Bay gradually grew into the game and Sam Hart headed narrowly over the bar from Tom McCready’s free kick and Bay had appeals that Alex Downes’ header from a corner had crossed the line before being cleared waved away.
They took the lead, however, on 24 minutes with a big assist from Joe Smith. His long kick caused confusion in the Pontypridd defence and as keeper George Ratcliffe raced off his line, Udi Akpan cleverly headed the ball over him and into an unguarded net.
Joe Smith made a great save to keep out Clayton Green’s looping header to deny the home side an equaliser before half-time.
Early in the second half Tom McCready curled a shot just over the bar from the edge of the area and Jamie Cumming put a shot just wide, while Bay rode their luck with Pontypridd hitting the post for a second time and having a goal disallowed for a foul.
But the game was sealed by two goals in the space of two minutes.
Udi Akpaun was brought down for a 67th minute penalty which was put away clinically by Tom McCready, and then Jamie Cumming got on the end of a great cross by Tommy Creamer for Bay’s third.
Pontypridd pushed for a late consolation, but the Bay held out for their first clean sheet in 12 games and their biggest league win of the season.
The Bay had young keeper Szymon Tyszko, who was playing for the Under-16s last season, making his first senior match day squad on the bench.
