Match Report
THE Seagulls suffered late heartbreak when they were beaten 3-2 by Connah’s Quay Nomads in a five-goal thriller on a freezing cold night at the 4 Crosses Arena.
They must have thought they had rescued at least a point when Udi Akpan scored a 75th minute penalty to level the scores at 2-2, only for Michael Wilde to head a winner for the visitors three minutes later.
That was cruel on the Bay who had taken a first half lead through Jamie Cumming, but Jordan Davies equalised before half-time with his 12th goal of the season and Harry Franklin then headed second-in-the-table Nomads into a 2-1 lead early in the second half.
Bay started the game well but failed to make the most of two early free kicks in promising poisitions, and Udi Akpan got clear from Matty Hill’s return pass only for a heavy touch allowing Nomads keeper Andy Firth to gather.
From another good break Udi saw his attempted pass to Matty Hill intercepted and Jamie Cumming fired a chance over the bar from Matty Hill’s long throw.
But Bay then took the lead on 28 minutes when Jamie Cumming curled a free kick into the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the area after another good spell of bay pressure.
Matty Hill fired another chance off target from Tommy Creamer’s cross, before Declan Poole’s pass set up Jordan Davies for Nomads’ 38th minute equaliser.
In the second half Nomads surtived a goalmouth scramble from another long throw from Matty Hill, before taking the lead with a far post header by Harry Franklin on 53 minutes.
Nomads also hit the bar with a Kai Edwards header, but Bay piled on the pressure, forcing several corners, before being awarded a 75th minute penalty which Udi Akpan rifled into the top corner of the net to put Bay level.
But joy quickly turned to despair as three minutes later, from another corner, Michael Wilde powered home a header to put Nomads back in front.
Bay had late chances to get an equaliser, but Dylan Allshorn, Tom Creamer and Udi Akpan all shot wide of the target.
