Match Report

THE Seagulls’ hopes of retaining their place in the Cymru Premier will go to the last weekend of the season.

They lost 3-1 away to Haverfordwest in their penultimate game, but Aberystwyth Town and Pontypridd also lost so it all goes down to the final games with Colwyn Bay needing to win by two goals at home to Barry Town and hope that Aberystwyth and Pontypridd draw their clash, or Pontypridd win (barring an appeal against their failure to get a Tier 1 licence for next season).

Colwyn Bay’s hopes of easing their path with a good result at Haverfordwest were blown away when they conceded two goals in the opening 10 minute.

A rash challenge by Sam Hart conceded a free kick just outside the area and Rhys Abbruzzese fired a brilliant shot into the top corner after eight minutes.

Two minutes later Lee Jenkins headed Haverfordwest’s second goal from Abbruzzese’s cross.

It was always going to be an uphill battle after that and although Colwyn Bay kept fighting they couldn’t find a goal to get them back in the game before half-time.

Alex Downes fired a half chance over the bar from Tom McCready’s corner, Jamie Cummings shot just wide after neat link-up play with Udi Akpan and Matty Hill headed wide from a good position.

In the second half Alex Downes’ header from Tom McCready’s free kick was easily taken by home keeper Zac Jones, who then made a tremendous save to tip a fierce Udi Akpan volley over the bar.

The game was sealed, however, on 73 minutes when an awful pass out by young keeper Reece Trueman presented Ben Fawcett with a gift third goal for the home side.

To their credit the Bay kept battling and after the keeper had made a diving save to turn a Tommy Creamer header round the post for a corner, Tom McCready pulled a goal back with a great strike from 25 yards with a the last kick of the game, which could yet prove crucial if it comes down to goal difference..
